    Adult Treatment

    Treatment

The spirit of our approach is active, compassionate and genuine. Whatever challenges you are experiencing, we’ll listen closely and work with you to develop a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an umbrella term for methods that share a focus on recognizing how thoughts and behaviours impact emotions, experimenting with new behaviours, and changing how we relate to our experiences. During treatment sessions, your therapist provide guidance on techniques to practice between sessions, and discuss the insights you have gained through practice.

The type of therapy that best suits you may include:

Individual Therapy

Couples Therapy

Group Therapy

Video Therapy / Telepsychology

Individual Therapy

Individual CBT programs are developed in a collaborative manner between you and your therapist, following a proper and thorough assessment. Tools, techniques and strategies are designed to be flexible and portable so you can use them effectively between sessions.

For most problems, CBT involves 8-20 one-hour sessions of psychotherapy. At the beginning of treatment, you will discuss your current problems and treatment goals. After you and your therapist have established these goals, you will then spend your sessions learning techniques for challenging your symptoms and changing your behaviour. Weekly homework varies, but it typically consists of 30 minutes to one hour each day of some combination of monitoring your thoughts, challenging your assumptions and beliefs, and experimenting with new behaviours.

At the beginning of your therapy, it is important to meet once each week to build momentum. However, once you gain some momentum and start to become confident with the learned techniques, the time between your appointments will likely be increased to once every two weeks or once each month.

Couples Therapy

It is not uncommon for couples to reach a point at which they feel like they need professional help to save their relationship or to decide whether or not to end it. In addition to seeing couples whose relationship is in crisis, we help couples who are satisfied with their relationships but feel that they get stuck in conflicts and/or want to make their connections even stronger.

In our approach to couples therapy, we strive to help couples:

  • Generate a greater understanding of each other
  • Encourage and foster respect, affection, closeness, and intimacy
  • Break negative patterns of conflict that keep them stuck
  • Learn how to keep discussions about conflict calm

Group Therapy

Group therapy can be a very powerful form of treatment for most common problems like depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder.

The benefits for you will include the ability to experience the support, encouragement and understanding of other people who are overcoming similar problems, as well as reduced cost.

At CBT Associates, we currently offer a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Depression Group and we have a number of other groups in development, including ongoing maintenance and support groups for people who have successfully completed individual treatment for OCD and social anxiety disorder.

Secure Video or Telepsychology Treatment Services

Online video treatment (also called telepsychology) has been proven to be as effective as face-to-face therapy for some cases. As such, you may not need to come to one of our offices to get help as we can provide treatment through a secure online video solution throughout Ontario.

Can We Help You?
