Dr. Daniel Peluso is one of our newest associates practicing at our North York clinic! Dr. Peluso graduated from the University of Toronto and University of Regina studying Psychology, and Classical Civilizations, and Languages. He has worked with diverse populations, treating veterans of Canadian Forces as well as working with First Nations in different areas of Saskatchewan. Dr. Peluso also published doctoral research on the training practices used in clinical psychology, and his Ph.D. dissertation focused on stressful life events, and examining the accurate diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Currently, Dr. Peluso also works in rehabilitation psychology at Toronto Western Hospital; this position focuses on chronic pain, mood and anxiety disorders, and musculoskeletal injuries.
We sat down with Dr. Peluso in order to gain some insight about his practice, and the type of practitioner he is.
What special qualities do you bring to your practice that you find helps clients the most?
“I have a genuine caring and concern for the person in front of me and their well-being. I have a keen interest and appreciation for the complexity of people and their concerns. Above all, I think my commitment is a quality that I find has made the biggest impact; I’m committed to the process of therapy, being consistently present for my clients, and deeply committed to guiding my clients in making meaningful, lasting change.”
What made you want to become a psychologist?
“A profound interest in people, and wanting to be of service to others, these have always been enduring aspects of my character. Ever since I learned that helping someone with perspective shifts, behaviour change, and working through difficult feelings was a career path, I wanted to be a psychologist. For me, this choice was an easy one.”
What do you most like about the profession?
“The high standard for care that we set as a profession is probably what I appreciate the most about being a psychologist. To be a psychologist in Ontario requires thousands of hours of training and supervised experience over several years. People are complex, problems can sometimes be very complicated – psychologists are professionally trained to think about, understand, and help shift these multi-layered issues. I am very proud to be a part of the profession for this reason.”
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
“I enjoy staying active by playing hockey (Yes, I am and always will be a Leafs fan), and soccer. I love the outdoors, especially hiking out west and on the east coast. I also have a great interest in reading about language, both fiction and non-fiction including ancient literature, ancient history, and classical antiquity. I also take time to dabble in poetry, some of my favourites being Homer and Simpson (and yes, I’m a fan of Homer Simpson as well). Finally, like most of our readers, I can never say no to a night of Netflix!”
