When we receive a referral from a case manager we call her/him to discuss the case and the cost of the assessment and treatment. As regulated health care professionals in Ontario, we are required to arrive at our own independent diagnostic opinion before beginning treatment. As a result, we conduct a brief treatment suitability assessment that typically consists of one and a half to two hours of clinical interviewing followed by one and a half to two hours of report writing, depending on the complexity of the case and the amount of collateral medical information that we are being asked to review. Our clinical training and experience as well as the use of a semi-structured diagnostic interview allow us to arrive at clear diagnostic opinions and realistic treatment plans.
